Overwhelming Victory for Cuba -- U.S. More Isolated than Ever On October 26, the United Nations for the 19th consecutive time voted to demand an end to the U.S. criminal blockade of Cuba,  which has been in place for more than 48 years. By a vote of 187 to 2 (United States and Israel), with 3 absentions (the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau), the international community repudiated Washington's economic war against Cuba.  What stands out is not only that Cuba recieved the same massive number of votes (187, more than 97% of UN member countries) as in 2009 but that the the U.S. is even more isolated, able to muster only one other vote besides its own (representing only 1.04% of UN members). Delegates and observers from 18 member organizations were joined by observers and invited guests including Her Excellency, the Cuban Ambassador to Canada Teresita Vicente, the Consul General of Cuba to Canada Jorge Soberón and other Cuban guests. The Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) was represented by its Vice-President Basilio Gutiérrez and Alison Bodine represented the organization Pastors for Peace, which organizes the Friendshipment Caravans, which are aimed at breaking the U.S. blockade of Cuba in which Canadian solidarity organizations participate.
