Democracy

Manufacturing the Enemy: the Media War Against Cuba - By Keith Bolender

Manufacturing the Enemy: the Media War Against Cuba examines through the extensive use of specific examples, how America’s corporate media has consistently promulgated a prejudicial viewpoint of the Cuban revolution, its society and the citizens who support the revolution. The intent of this propaganda war is to convince the American public of the unworthiness of the revolution and the failures of Fidel Castro’s socialist system. This is founded on corporate media’s institutional credo to support and protect American political and economic foreign policy objectives, accomplished by compromising the standards of fair and balanced reporting. The media has historically been biased in Cuba coverage, in support of state objectives, going back to US desires to possess the island from the 19th Century and throughout the neo-colonial period of the 20th Century. America's policy of regime change in Cuba has been consistently supported by corporate media's biased coverage of the island nation.

Cuba Solidarity in Canada - Edited by Nino Pagliccia

Five Decades of People-to-People Foreign Relations, is a collection of essays about the Canadian solidarity movement in support of Cuba during more than 50 years. Throughout the different experiential stories, the notion of solidarity emerges as the common theme of people-to-people (non-governmental) links between Canada and Cuba. The book suggests a framework that informs the reader on the meaning, positive influence and potentially valuable role that solidarity can play in the relationship between peoples, indeed between nations. It also advances the possibility of a new paradigm of state-to-state foreign relations that is based on solidarity instead of ideological posture.

Cuba and Its Neighbours - Democracy in Motion - Arnold August

In this groundbreaking book, Arnold August explores Cuba’s unique form of democracy, presenting a detailed and balanced analysis of Cuba’s electoral process and the state’s functioning between elections. By comparing it with practices in the U.S., Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, August shows that people’s participation in politics and society is not limited to a singular U.S.-centric understanding of democracy. For example, democracy as practised in the U.S. is largely non-participatory, static and fixed in time.

"Arnold August cuts through the common propaganda about democracy in the U.S. and the supposed lack of democracy in Cuba." - Cliff DuRand, Professor Emeritus of Social Philosophy, Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

"A must-read for anybody seriously interested in Cuba, and in the overall question of democracy and its practices." - Claudia Kaiser-Lenoir, Professor Emerita of Latin American Studies, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts.

What Lies Across the Water - The Real Story of the Cuban Five - Stephen Kimber

”Provides the key information and analysis needed to understand the case of the Cuban Five” — Danny Glover, actor, activist

”The most complete — and moving — account of the Cuban Five I’ve yet read.” — Wayne Smith, Director, US Interest Section in Havana, 1979-82

”Far from being a boring account of deeds and misdeeds, Kimber employs eloquent prose and an enjoyable style to draw the reader into the tangled layers of terrorism and murder, espionage and deception, propaganda and myths, life sentences and impunity, meanness and hatred, love and sacrifice, romance and solitude, patriotism and delusion, good intentions and bad, and lies, lies, and more lies.” —Havana Times

”This book removes the thin fabric of lies around the case of five Cuban intelligence agents who came to Miami to fight terrorism ... This book has the detail and the analysis. Read it.” — Saul Landau, Director of Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up?
