January 5th marks the first '5th of the month for the Cuban 5' in the new year. As 2013 comes to a close, we can look back at the last year in the case of the 5 Cuban heroes and see many victories in this battle that we continue to fight. Although 2013 was another year that the Cuban 5 spent behind US prison bars, in 2013, Rene Gonzalez, one of the Cuban 5 who had completed his prison sentence and was serving out parole in Florida, was allowed to remain at home in Cuba. In 2013, the international movement for the Cuban 5 vowed to take that victory and extend it by re-doubling our efforts to free ALL the Cuban 5.

As the late Leonard Wineglass, one of the lawyer's for the Cuban 5 once said, "these 5 men have had the very heart of their lives stolen."With each passing year the injustice grows deeper and deeper, but not once in the 15 years since their arrest have the Cuban 5 heroes lost hope for their release. We want 2014 to be the year that all of the Cuban 5 are released from US prisons and returned to their homeland.

As we get closer to the 100th consecutive monthly picket for the Cuban 5 heroes on March 5th, let us make our voices louder and louder each time we picket in front of the US Consulate, demanding:

  • FREE ALL THE 5 CUBAN HEROES NOW!
  • RELEASE ANTONIO, FERNANDO, RAMÓN & GERARDO FROM U.S. PRISONS NOW!
  • GRANT A VISA TO ADRIANA PEREZ NOW!

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are five men who were wrongly accused and convicted in a U.S. Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other fabricated charges, following their arrest and imprisonment in 1998. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba. In April of 2013 René González, one of the Cuban 5, returned permanently to Cuba in a great victory for justice-loving people all over the world. Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio and Fernando remain unjustly in U.S. jails facing sentences up to double-life plus 15 years.

“The rain of the homeland calls us to its heart! It is the moment! For that, we need a strong and infinite rain of solidarity, of battle, to demand justice until we attain the final victory and can meet and all of us enjoy a new sunset.”

These are the powerful words of Ramón Labañino, one of the Cuban 5 Heroes held in U.S jails. They were part of a message read by Ramon's daughter, Laura, at the 9th International Colloquium for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, held in Holguin, Cuba from November 13th to 17th. More than 300 delegates from 51 countries were present at the Colloquium, among them three organizers from the Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver. Participants vowed to strengthen their unity and increase their efforts until all 5 Cuban Heroes are released from prison and back in Cuba with their loved ones.

The 97th Picket Action for the freedom of the Cuban 5 Heroes marks 8 years since the first picket organized by the Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver, in December of 2005. As we raise our signs and our voices in front of the U.S. Consulate this month in Vancouver, we bring with us the voices of participants at the Colloquium, as well as the never-faltering commitment of the Cuban 5 Heroes and their families to this international struggle for dignity and justice.

Later that evening, at the Cultural Event and Report Back, people in Vancouver will also have the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the achievements of this 9th International Colloquium for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, and the planning and strategy for future actions for the Cuban 5 Heroes in Canada and internationally.

Join with us as we demand:
FREE ALL THE 5 CUBAN HEROES NOW!
RELEASE ANTONIO, FERNANDO, RAMÓN & GERARDO FROM U.S. PRISONS NOW!
