DR HELEN YAFFE - a Senior Lecturer in Economic and Social History at the University of Glasgow and a Visiting Fellow at the Latin America and Caribbean Centre at the London School of Economics. Since 1995 she has spent time living and researching in Cuba and participating in solidarity campaigns. Helen has co-produced two documentaries: Cuba & Covid-19: Public Health, Science and Solidarity (2020) and Cuba’s Life Task: Combating Climate Change (2021) . She is the author of Youth Activism and Solidarity: The Non-Stop Picket against Apartheid (2017), We Are Cuba! How a Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World (Yale Press, 2020), and Che Guevara: the Economics of Revolution (2009).
KELLY WHITE - Coast Salish Elder. Long-time social justice and Indigenous rights organizer and activist. Broadcaster and filmmaker with Stories from the Salish Seas.
ALISON BODINE - Central organizer with Climate Convergence Metro Vancouver, board Member of the West Coast Climate Action Network. Alison is also on the Editorial Board of the Fire This Time Newspaper.
CHRIS PFORR - Long-time member of Seattle/Cuba Friendship Committee, presently webmaster and emailer for the group. Chris had an amazing 3-month stay in Cuba in 1994, but hasn’t been back to visit the island since 1998.

Join us for an important webinar featuring the Vancouver Premiere of the documentary “Cuba’s Life Task: Combating Climate Change.” Featuring the director, Dr. Helen Yaffe and other guests!

More about this important documentary: Climate change is among the world’s greatest challenges. As a small Caribbean island, Cuba is disproportionately affected by climate change through extreme weather events. Up to 10% of Cuban territory could be submerged by the end of the century, wiping out coastal towns, polluting water supplies, destroying agricultural lands and forcing one million people to relocate. Finding solutions is now essential. In this documentary, Dr Helen Yaffe goes to Cuba to find out about ‘Tarea Vida’ (Life Task), a long-term state plan to protect the population, environment and the economy from climate change. The Cuban approach combines environmental science, natural solutions and community participation in strategies for adaptation and mitigation. There are lessons here for the world.
