>> ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL CHE GUEVARA CONFERENCE <<
Since the triumph of Cuba’s 1959 revolution to today, the vision and political ideas that shape the Cuban revolution remain a source of inspiration, discussion and debate around the world. Through the ideas of Fidel, Che, the Cuban socialist project, and the dynamics of the mass revolutionary movement, Cuba has become a country renowned for its achievements in health, education, culture, science and many other aspects of social and human progress. The Cuban socialist project and the Cuban revolutionary leadership, despite 50 years of an inhuman and criminal blockade by consecutive US administrations, have never wavered to imperialist pressure.

The International Che Guevara Conference is an opportunity to discuss and debate the ideas of the Cuban revolution, its dynamism and how it has impacted Latin America and the world.

The first International Che Guevara Conference in 2008 was on the theme, “Che Guevara, Thinker & Fighter: Are His Ideas Relevant for the 21st Century?” The Second International Che Conference in 2009 was on, “50 Years of Dynamism of the Cuban Revolution.” The Third International Che Conference in 2010 was on, “Cuba & Revolutionary Internationalism.” The Fourth International Che Conference in 2011 was on, “Cuba Today – The Gains and the Challenges.”

The 2012 International Che Guevara Conference discussed the most importance changes Cuba has seen in the last 50 years since Fidel's Second Declaration of Havana, in 1961. This conference, titled “Cuba's Reforms: Capitalism or Socialism” investigated, with the participation of 6 Cuban guests including  Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, the roots of the current reforms and their future prospects and challenges.

In 2015 the Che Conference returns with, “Cuba, A Socialist Project in Progress” which aims to delve deeper into what has made the Cuban Socialist Revolution successful move forward and how it is evolving today.

This year's conference we will also discuss the recent developments in US/Cuba relations. This includes the historic victory of the return to Cuba of all 5 Cuban Heroes who were unjustly imprisoned for over 16 years in US jails. As well, we will examine the announcements by Cuban President Raul Castro and US President Barack Obama that new steps towards normalization of relations would occur between the two countries. This announcement has come over 50 years after the US broke diplomatic relations and imposed a cruel and ongoing blockade on Cuba. What has changed?

José Martí Dinner and Dance Sat. Jan. 31, 2015 Print E-mail

The executive members of the CCFA Toronto hope that you and your friends will join us for our Jose Marti Dinner and Dance at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the AUUC Hall at 1604 Bloor Street West. The AUUC Hall is easily accessible by TTC and is just 1.5 blocks west of the Dundas West Subway Station. This event celebrates the January 28, 1853 date of birth of José Martí, Cuba’s national hero and father of independence. Please scroll to the end of this article for ticket information.

Why celebrate José Martí’s life?

In his short life of just 42 years, Martí’s achievements seem like those of ten people, and not just one man; he was a poet, an essayist, a journalist, a revolutionary philosopher, a translator, a professor, a publisher, and a political theorist. In his early youth, he even studied fine art and drawing but soon turned his attention to activities that promoted Cuban independence and freedom.

He traveled extensively, spending time in Spain, France, Mexico, Guatemala, the United States of America, Venezuela, Central America, and the West Indies, all the time promoting Cuban and Latin American independence. Martí hated slavery, which still existed in Cuba, and also campaigned for its abolishment. In Cuba, so revered is Martí that beside the front door of every school stands his bust. For the above reasons, the CCFA Toronto celebrates Martí’s birthday.

Dinner

Dinner will be a traditional Cuban supper of congri (rice and black beans), salad, and chicken (a vegetarian option is available – please advise in advance), and a cash bar.

Dancing

After supper, you’ll have the opportunity to put on your dancing shoes and dance the salsa, mambo, cha-cha, etc. with Cuban musician Pablo Terry and his band “Sol de Cuba”. Pablo’s musical prowess and personal warmth never fail to inspire one to move to the rhythms! Dance sets will begin at 9:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.

Door prize and raffle

There will be a door prize – a bottle of Cuban rum – so keep the ticket stub you will be given when you arrive.

We will have a raffle for some items, such as a CD recorded in 2014 by Jane Bunnett and the all-women Cuban band Maqueque; a novel about Cuba, called Anita’s Revolution by Vancouver author Shirley Langer; baseball cards of Cuban players; and a Cuban baseball cap hand-made entirely of beer cans and leather — a unique collector’s item indeed! Tickets will be one for $2.00, or 3 for $5.00. Proceeds from the raffle will go towards supporting Cuban health care workers helping with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Ticket information

Advance Dinner/Dance tickets are for $35.00 per adult, $15.00 per child under 12. If you require a vegetarian meal, please advise at time of ticket purchase. Mail cheques to:
