If you haven't registered yet, this unique trip is not to be missed! For two full weeks in Cuba, from April 26th – May 9th, 2015 the volunteer work brigade combines volunteer work with cultural, social, economic and political encounters visiting different cities across the island. This year is an extra special opportunity with the 5 Cuban Heroes free and in Cuba after spending 16 years imprisoned in the United States for defending their county against US terrorism. As well, the Brigade will participate in Havana’s powerful May Day parade!

The CJAM camp is where international solidarity guests stay while in volunteering in Cuba. Thousands of people visit CJAM every year, up to 500 at one time, and it has been a real challenge for the camp to provide the necessary services to its guests, especially because of the cruel US blockade. If something breaks, it is never just as easy as buying a replacement.

Following a very successful fundraising campaign where we were able to provide the camp with a new water pump, we are continuing to help the camp which is so important to Cuba and the international solidarity movement. In discussions with the camp's workers, they have told us that the most urgent needs are now a tractor and a freezer truck.

When Cuba calls, we answer! We have launched a campaign to raise the necessary funds by July 1, 2015. This is an ambitious goal, but we believe with the support we are receiving from so many groups and individuals this will be possible. Please join us!

WOMEN & THE CUBAN REVOLUTION Print E-mail

A Revolution Within the Revolution

Film, Live Music & Poetry

An evening featuring political and cultural presentations from women around the world!

SATURDAY March 7 - 6pm
Vancouver Public Library ~ Peter Kay Room
350 West Georgia Street
Downtown Vancouver, Canada

The Cuban revolution of 1959 opened a new era for Cuban women, which Fidel Castro in 1966 stated “has meant a double liberation” for women, “who were discriminated against not only as workers but also as women.” Under the Cuban revolution women have advanced the struggle for women's rights, starting immediately after the triumph of the revolution. Women in Cuba are guaranteed equal pay, universal childcare, and it is enshrined into law with Cuba's Family Code Bill that participation in household work should be equal. The results today are that Cuban women make up 43% of Parliament, and 60% of professional and technical workers.

Cuban women have also achieved the impressive rank of third highest in the world for the percentage of women in government.

The “Revolution within the Revolution” is what Fidel called the fight for women's rights in Cuba, and it is a revolution which is thriving and moving forward even today, for Cuban women and the world-wide struggle of for women's rights!

Featuring International Greetings from:

  • Miraly González González – First Secretary and Political Attaché of the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa
  • Carolina Escarrá – International Relations of the Youth of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (JPSUV)

Some Remarks and Poetry by:

  • Kelly White
  • Colleen Glynn
  • Tamara Hansen
  • Azza Rojbi
  • Macarena Cataldo Hernandez
  • Mayra
