WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are five men who were wrongly accused and convicted in a U.S. Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other fabricated charges, following their arrest and imprisonment in 1998. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba. As of March, 2014 René González and Fernando González have both returned permanently to Cuba in a great victory for justice-loving people all over the world. Gerardo, Ramón, and Antonio remain unjustly in U.S. jails facing sentences up to double-life plus 15 years.

BBQ & Potluck Picnic
SATURDAY JULY 26, 2014
TROUT LAKE PARK - 6pm
3350 Victoria Drive
Near the Concession Stand - Look for the Cuban Flags!
Vancouver, Canada

On July 26th, 1953 a group of Cuban revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. Although this attack was defeated militarily, taking the lives of dozens of rebel fighters and imprisoning many others, including Fidel Castro, it is seen as the beginning of the Cuban revolution. It is the July 26th Movement, named after this initial defeat, that led the Cuban revolution to victory under the leadership of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and their compañeros.

In May 2014 the 2014 Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade was in Cuba, visiting Havana, Caimito, Sancti Spiritus, Trinidad and Santa Clara. This group of over 30 participants from across Canada visited schools, medical clinics, cultural projects, historical sites and had a chance to work side-by-side with Cubans. On July 26th, many BC participants will join us to show photos and give a report back on this important experience.

Please join us in the beautiful Trout Lake Park to commemorate the July 26th movement and learn about the Che Brigade. Through a program of dynamic speakers, poets, musicians and good food!

>> Rain or Shine! <<

>> The event is free, BBQ by donation & if possible bring some food to share for the potluck! <<
