Assembly of First Nations Honours Miguel Alfonso Martinez, Cuban Specialist on Rights of Indigenous Peoples Print E-mail

In a moving ceremony 12 July 2011, during its 32nd Annual Assembly in Moncton NB, the Assembly of First Nations conferred the inaugural Treaty Rights Recognition award on the late Miguel Alfonso Martinez.

In presenting the award, National Chief Shawn Atleo underscored the invaluable contribution made by Miguel Alfonso to the defence of the rights of indigenous peoples around the globe, particularly the affirmation of rights established under various treaties. National Chief Atleo further outlined the profound respect and esteem with which Mr. Alfonso was held by indigenous peoples across the world. A Mi'kmaq elder then performed a song written in Mi'kmaq to specifically honour the memory and contribution of Mr. Alfonso. In receiving the award on behalf of her late husband, Portia Sigelbaum emphasized Mr. Alfonso's dedication to the cause of indigenous peoples, describing his many journeys around the world to talk directly to communities, including those in the Canadian north.

The Pastors for Peace caravan to Cuba is traveling through California. On Thursday, they were in Fresno for an event sponsored by the Center for Nonviolence, where they picked up three more passengers and material aid for Cuba. This route is one of 12 in the US and Canada where they will give presentations in 130 cities.

Victory at US-Canada Border for Caravan to Cuba! Print E-mail

On Sunday July 3rd 2011, on the West Coast of Canada and the United States, the 22nd Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba successfully crossed its first frontier in challenging the US blockade on Cuba! Despite the attempts by US Customs to prevent a van load of humanitarian aid, including medical supplies and bicycles, to cross the US border, the aid and seven Caravanistas successfully crossed the border in to Washington State!

A Big Victory for Human RightsCanadian and American activists successfully transport humanitarian aid across the US/Canada border in spite US border authorities’ intimidation and harassment.

On Sunday July 3, 2011 over 70 peace and social justice-minded people from across the province of British Columbia and the state of Washington merged together at the Peace Arch Border Crossing in White Rock/Blaine. They gathered to send off the 22nd Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba, with route speaker, Alicia Jrapko, coordinator of the International Committee to Free the Cuban 5, who came to BC from San Francisco. The border crossing was organized by Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC), the newly formed BC Aid Network for Cuba (BCANC), as well as other Cuba solidarity organizations and individuals from Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, Victoria, Nanaimo, Salt Spring Island, Courtney/Comox, Penticton, Bellingham, Tacoma, Seattle and Olympia. Before heading to the border on Sunday, the Caravan had finished its visit of British Columbia, having visited Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Nanaimo, Courtenay/Comox, Penticton and Vancouver.

The diary was launched yesterday at Havana’s International Press Center, to coincide with the 83rd anniversary of the birth of the heroic guerrilla.
