Cuban President Remembers Ho Chi Minh

Hanoi, Jul 9 (Prensa Latina) We must thank Vietnam for the lessons it has always taught us, the Cuban President, Raul Castro, said here today in a particularly moving day of visits.

He began the day placing a wreath at the monument for martyrs of Vietnam's independence wars, and at the Mausoleum where Ho Chi Minh lies.

Chinese President Receives Raul Castro

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 5 (acn) Chinese President Hu Jintao officially welcomed the visiting Cuban president Raul Castro in Beijing.

In the People’s Palace in the Chinese capital both heads of state held private talks, and later delegations from the two countries met, according to the Cuban National TV Newsreel.

Raul Castro Congratulates Algerian President on Anniversary

Havana, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Raul Castro sent congratulations to his Algerian counterpart, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, on the 50th anniversary of his country's independence, reported the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to a statement released by the Ministry, Raul Castro sent a message to Bouteflika in which he also confirmed "his commitment to continue strengthening and expanding the fraternal relations that bind our countries."

MR. President;

Your Excellencies:

Twenty years ago, on June 12, 1992, in this same conference hall, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz stated, and I quote, “An important biological species is at risk of disappearing due to the rapid and progressive liquidation of its natural living conditions: humanity.” End of quote.

What could have been considered alarmist, today constitutes an irrefutable reality. The inability to transform unsustainable models of production and consumption is threatening the balance and regeneration of natural mechanisms which sustain life forms on the planet.

The effects cannot be hidden. Species are becoming extinct at a speed one hundred times faster than those indicated in fossil records; more than five million hectares of forests are lost every year; and close to 60% of ecosystems are degraded.
