Africa Called, Cuba Answered: Cuba’s Critical Contribution to the Fight against Ebola Print E-mail

- Cuban Doctor on Cross-Canada Tour, May 14-30, 2015 -

From May 14 to 30, Dr. José de Jesús Portilla García, a participant in various Cuban medical internationalist missions, will speak in several Canadian cities on Cuba's Humanitarian Medical Missions across the world, especially in fighting the Ebola epidemic in the West African nations of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Cuba has made a critical contribution to the fight against the Ebola epidemic in the West African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.  Standing side-by-side with the peoples of West Africa, more than 450 Cuban doctors and nurses – chosen from more than 15,000 volunteers - went to West Africa and joined the struggle against Ebola. The Cuban medical mission was by far the largest sent by any country. Even the Wall Street Journal stated: “Few have heeded the call, but one country has responded in strength: Cuba.”

Dr. Portilla's visit includes stops in Toronto (May 14-17); Halifax (May 18-19); Vancouver (May 20-21); Calgary (May 22); Ottawa (May 23-24); Montreal (May 25); Kingston (May 26); Hamilton (May 17) and Niagara (May 28).  Dr. Portiila will conclude his tour of Canada on May 30 in public event in Toronto during the 7th Convention of the Canadian Network on Cuba (CNC).

Dr. Portilla García has considerable experience in and knowledge of Cuba's medical internationalist missions across the globe. He has had a distinguished career. Highlights include: chief of Cuban medical personnel during Cuba's internationalist mission in the former Republic of Congo (1974) and Angola (1983-85); head of PCC’s Department of Heath for the province of Havana and director of the Department of Bilateral Collaboration in the Ministry of Public Health.

Currently, he oversees Cuba's medical missions in 15-countries from the Americas to Asia.

Come to see why Cuba’s unique medical brigades are renowned worldwide for their contribution to global health and friendship between nations. Cuba demonstrates what can be achieved when self-serving interests do not direct the aid and assistance provided.
