Cuba and the Defence of Its Sovereignty

On November 21, a meeting on Cuba was held at the CEGEP de l'Outaouais sponsored by l'Association d'Amitié Outaouais Cuba, la Société National des Québecois de l'Outaouais, Collectif Montferrand and l'Association Général des Etudiantes at Etudiants de l'Outaouais.

Solidarity Meeting in the OutaouaisThe meeting was well attended by many CEGEP students and professors and people from different community groups in Gatineau and Ottawa.

His Excellency Julio Garmendia Peña, Cuban Ambassador to Canada led the discussion on the political, economic and social situation in Cuba. He spoke at length about the great campaign of reforms taken up by the government and people to protect the sovereignty of Cuba and improve their well-being.

Ambassador Garmendia pointed out that some in the western media have used the introduction of the reforms to misrepresent what is taking place and even suggest that socialism is being abandoned. Nothing could be further from the truth. The ambassador stressed that the campaign of reforms led by the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban government, based on the widest possible consultation at all levels of Cuban society, are intended to stabilize and strengthen the economy and protect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cuba.

During the question and answer period, Ambassador Garmendia pointed out that based on dealing with their own conditions and defending socialism, the Cuban people are creating their own model.

His comments were highly appreciated by the participants.

The meeting also heard a short presentation by activist Martine Vaugien-Gadbois, on the vast international campaign on behalf of the Cuban five who were unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. for their heroic anti-terrorist activities.

A lively discussion followed the presentations.
