Spanish Right Unable to Consolidate Anti-Cuban Feeling

Havana, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) The right-wing had been unable to consolidate anti Cuban feeling, said Jose Luis Centella, secretary general of the Spanish Communist Party spread by media.

There is a reality they had never been able to change: the Spanish people are in solidarity with the Cuban people, Centella said in an interview to Granma newspaper about the attempt by Spanish sectors to retake an aggressive policy against Cuba.

They haven’t managed to do so, despite the many attempts, the political leader noted, who met this weekend with prime minister of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, Raul Castro.

What increases every day is the solidarity gesture to Cuba, Centella said, who is the spokesman from the United Left in the national Congress of Spain.

More people know about the Cuban Five in Spain, he said in relation to the case of the anti terrorists Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who were arrested in the U.S. about 14 years ago.

Cuba to Increase Production of Sugarcane By-Products

Havana, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is working today to reach the point where it can take full advantage of sugarcane for the production of electric energy, animal feed, and other high-value by-products, said an official from the sugar sector.

This is a high priority in the strategy for annual increases of between 15 and 20 percent in sugar cane volume, the president of Cuba's Sugar Industry Business Group (Azcuba), Orlando Celso Garcia, also said.

"The most important thing is that we try to achieve that increase accompanied, above all, by a progressive decrease in production costs and a rise in agricultural yield, with an increasing use of irrigation and other technologies," Garcia noted.

Garcia summarized the results from Cubazucar's international seminar, held in the context of the 50th anniversary of that company within the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment.

The event, which took place over three days at a Havana hotel, was sponsored by Cubazucar, the International Sugar Organization (ISO) and Azcuba.

Garcia stated that sugarcane production, the main limiting factor in previous years, has been growing steadily and will continue to do so from now on.

Regarding the just-ended sugar cane harvest, Garcia said the country achieved a 17 percent increase in the volume of sugarcane, compared with the previous year.

Cuba Promotes Environment Friendly Power Generation

HAVANA, Cuba, June 9 (ACN)—While polluting emissions increasingly contaminate the world environment, Cuba promotes the rational use of energy and environmental protection as part of its power generation process.

Although the Caribbean island is boosting the use of renewable energy sources, 96 percent of its electricity production is based on fossil fuels. The electricity sector is therefore following up on indications stemming from a strategy drawn up eight years ago, which launched an energy saving program known here as the Energy Revolution, PL news reported.

The indications, aimed at increasing the local power generation capacity, production efficiency, and at lowering energy losses, allow producing electricity with 25 percent more efficiency, reads an article posted on Cubadebate website.

With this in mind, over 700 thousand improving actions have benefited power distribution networks, more than 20 million inefficient electrical appliances and equipment were replaced with others that considerably save energy (electric cookers, water heaters, fridges, fans and bulbs).

These measures along with the increasing use of renewable energy sources contributed to reduce polluting emissions by 20 percent last year, with respect to 1990, while at the world level such emissions increased 40 percent if compared to 2011.

The article explains that renewable energy sources such as wind and water alone allowed saving 31 150 tons of fuel last year and thus prevented the emission of over 100 000 tons of Carbon Dioxide.

This adds the environment-friendly production of electricity fueled with oil-accompanying gas, in the localities of Varadero, Matanzas province, and Jaruco, east of Havana. The oil-accompanying gas used to escape to the atmosphere, while it has now become a valuable source of energy.

The article also underscores that the use of renewable energy sources cannot be postponed in Cuba, since it is a factor favoring economic development and the environment, and whose importance needs to be promoted through environmental education and a change in patterns of social behavior.

Guantanamo Province Hosts July 26 Celebrations this Year

HAVANA, Cuba, June 9 (ACN)—The easternmost province of Guantanamo will be the venue this year of celebrations for National Rebelliousness Day, following a new method to decide which Cuban province hosts the event, according to Granma newspaper.

The commemoration of National Rebelliousness Day each 26 of July, as an homage to the historic importance of the attacks, back in 1953, on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Batista army barracks by a group of youths headed by Fidel Castro, is a reason of legitimate proud for Cuban revolutionaries, the article reads.

The appointment of Guantanamo as the venue of the national event is in tune with a decision by the Political Bureau of Cuba’s Communist Party to change the method traditionally used to grant the hosting of the celebrations.

Every year, a given province won the main venue of these celebrations after having achieved the most significant economic and social indicators. The method will now change to shifting the host each year to a different territory.

The daily explains, that the Political Bureau of Cuba’s Communist Party agreed to end the previous rating method to appoint the venue given the different economic and social characteristics of each Cuban territory, which make it difficult to measure the results and come up with the province wining the venue.

However, since Santiago de Cuba province was the main scenario of the 1953 events, the Political Bureau decided that this territory will host celebrations in 2013, marking the 60th anniversary of the attacks, and then every ten years thereafter.
