- Ernesto Che Brigade Press Release -
- Canadian Network On Cuba, April 29, 2012 -

On Sunday, April 29, forty-five (45) Canadians departed for Cuba as members of the Canadian Network On Cuba’s 20th Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. The brigade is organized in conjunction with the Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples). Brigade coordinator Dave Thomas points out that “the brigade is an annual demonstration of the strong ties of solidarity and friendship that exist between the Canadian and Cuban people.”  Thomas further added “it is especially poignant that we are sending out largest group of Canadians ever at this time in the wake of Harper’s government support for the U.S. opposition to Cuba’s participation in the recently concluded Summit of the Americas.”

Hailing from six provinces the participants range in age from 17 to 73, representing several sectors of Canadian society: students, trade unionists, educators, professionals and retirees.  During their 19-days in Cuba, members will engage in numerous activities, including, voluntary work, seminars, visits to historical sites, schools, hospitals and community centres, and participation in national celebrations in Cuba.  Also, participating in this year’s 20th Brigade will be Nino Pagliccia, coordinator of 12 previous brigades, and the person most credited with laying the foundation of the Brigade’s success.

Arriving on April 29th and returning May 18th the Brigade will spend the first week in the city of Holguin in eastern Cuba, taking part in the May Day Celebrations and the famous Las Romerias cultural event.  In the second week, the Brigade will travel to historic Santiago de Cuba, visiting the tomb of Cuba’s national hero José Martí, the Monacada Barracks and the El Cobre Basilica, home of the Virgin of Charity. The third and final week will be spent in Holguin.
