6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba to be
held in
April 2011
Intense Period of National Discussion, Debate
and Consultation Begins
On November 8, Cuban President Raul Castro, announced the decision to hold
the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba in April 2011. The 6th Congress
will take place during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Cuba's victory
over the U.S. sponsored and organized Bay of Pigs invasion and the 50th
anniversary of the Declaration of the Socialist Character of the Cuban
Revolution. The Congress will be an extremely important event for the Cuban
nation, as it will focus on Cuba's economic development policy.
In preparation
for the 6th Congress, the Cuban people will engage in a profound country-wide
discussion and debate from December 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011 of the document
"The Economic and Social Development Policy Project." The document lays out
proposals and guidelines, which will be accepted, modified or amended based on
the outcomes of the national discussion and debate at the 6th Congress.
The
Economic and Social Development Policy Project states: "The Sixth Party Congress
will concentrate on a solution to our economic problems...The economic policy in
the new phase will correspond with the principle that only socialism is capable
of overcoming difficulties and preserving the gains of the revolution, and that
in updating the economic model, planning will be paramount, not the market."
